Roulette is a game of chance played with a small ball and a spinning wheel. A player puts money on the table, then watches as the ball bounces around until it lands in one of the numbered pockets on the wheel.
You can bet on individual numbers or groups of numbers until the croupier announces “no more bets.” Avoid grandiose betting systems that claim to beat the odds!
Origin
Roulette is a game that has its roots in gambling and has long been popular among upper-class French society. However, it wasn’t until the late 1700s when it first appeared in gambling houses in Paris that the game became as familiar as it is today.
Its exact origin is unknown. There are many fanciful stories regarding its creation. Some historians claim that it was invented by a 17th century French mathematician named Blaise Pascal as part of his experiment to create a perpetual motion machine. Others say that it originated from the Italian board game biribi, which was similar to modern roulette in that players bet on a layout of numbered squares. It was subsequently brought to France where it was given its current name.
Variations
There are a number of variations to the game of roulette. While most of them have the same basic gameplay and payouts, some feature unique characteristics that set them apart from their more common counterparts. Double Action Roulette, for example, is played on a wheel that has two concentric rings and delivers winning numbers twice each spin. This variation also offers La Partage, which refunds half of even money bets that lose to a 0 on the wheel.
