The Basics of Roulette

A roullete table has numbers and betting areas that players use to place bets. Bet types fall into two groups: inside bets and outside bets. Each has different risks and payout odds.

Inside bets are placed on individual numbers or small number combinations. They have higher payouts but lower chances of winning than outside bets.

Origin

Roulette’s origins are a little obscure. The game is believed to have evolved from older games like portique, hoca and roly poly. These earlier games were also based on numbers that were arranged on a wheel, although it is hard to distinguish them from modern roulette.

Eventually, the Blanc brothers created a version of the game that was closer to the one we know today. They standardized the color of the zero pockets to green, which is the convention that is still used to this day.

The first true roulette, closely resembling what we play today, emerged in Paris in the early 1700s. It was a popular game, and it soon spread to casinos all over Europe. It became known as the aristocrat of gambling games because it offered a wide range of betting scales and promised dramatic swings of fortune.
