The Roulette wheel consists of thirty-six colored and numbered compartments (called frets by croupiers) with one or two green pockets labeled zero (or double zero in American roulette). Players bet on the numbers they think will come up on the table layout.
Origin
There are many theories about the origin of roulette, but most agree that it is a game of chance with French roots. The name, roullete, comes from the French word for little wheel, and its history dates back centuries. The game consists of a small, spinning wheel with 38 (or, in modern European/Latin American tables, 37) divisions on it. Players place bets by placing chips on the table, and each number corresponds to one of the divisions on the wheel. Some of the games most often thought to be precursors to roulette include portique, hoca, bassette, and roly poly.
It is believed that the 17th-century French mathematician Blaise Pascal inadvertently invented the roulette wheel as part of his efforts to produce a perpetual motion machine. The roulette wheel became the centrepiece of Paris’ gambling scene by the mid-18th century.
Variations
While it seems to be the case that each game has its own specific rules, payouts and house edge, there is actually a considerable amount of variation between different Roulette variations. The most notable difference is the make-up of the wheel – European Roulette contains only 38 pockets and has no double zero, making it easier to play and offering higher odds for winning. This makes it the most popular form of the game worldwide.
