The most basic domino game involves a double-six set. The 28 tiles are shuffled face down and arranged in a stock, or boneyard, for each player. The players then draw seven tiles, one by one.
When the first domino falls, it releases gravitational potential energy into kinetic energy (and heat from friction). This process repeats itself with each subsequent domino that is placed.
Origin
Domino is a name that has come to be associated with luck and power. This is reflected in the fact that it is a popular surname, spouse name, and child name.
The name domino is believed to be derived from the Latin dominus, meaning master or lord. It may also have been influenced by a hooded cape worn with a mask at masquerades.
The game of domino first appeared in Europe during the early 18th century and spread to different countries with time. There are many different types of domino games that use different strategies, tile starts, and designs. These games have helped the game become one of the most popular in the world. The game also reached America thanks to European immigrants. It became a favorite in family parlors and pubs.
Rules
In domino, the goal is to empty your hand before your opponent. The player who has the most pips in their hand at the end of a turn is declared the winner.
To make a match, move a domino one space along its long axis so that at least one of its numbers matches an adjacent number on a neighbouring domino. Then collect the moved domino and any others that match it, removing them from the pattern.
If a pair of numbers has just been split, look for other pairs like them elsewhere on the board and treat them as newly split. For example, the two/one domino in the top right corner cannot be joined, but you can join other two/one pairs around it.
Variations
Many domino games have different rules and can be played with a variety of domino sets. These include a standard double-six set and the curved variant known as Bendomino. The latter features a special tile that can be played on any side.
A player’s score depends on the number of tiles that match his or her opponent’s hand. The player with the lowest total is declared the winner after several rounds of play.
Typically, the player who holds the highest single domino makes the first play. Alternatively, the player with the highest double begins play. This is called buying or passing and may differ from game to game. A player can also purchase the heaviest tile in a particular game. This is often done to resolve ties.
Materials
Initially, the Domino connecting system was sketched on a napkin and later, various draft designs, CAD drawings and parts lists followed. This new wood joining system works simply and efficiently for board, frame and shelving joints as well as delicate or solid workpieces. It also eliminates the need for templates or complex measuring.
With Domino, routing is done without having to make additional adjustments on the router, thereby reducing the overall set-up time. The routing depth corresponds to half of the domino length, ensuring that the connection is centered within the workpiece.
Domino is available as a set and in individual components. It features flat and corner knock down connectors with different routing heights for versatile applications. The connectors are available in three colors and can be combined with matching cover caps.
Scoring
A domino is scored based on its number of pips and the rules of a particular game. Some games use a system of bidding or counting the dominoes in the losing players’ hands. Other games involve blocking the opponents’ play or scoring.
The first double played in a round is called the spinner. A spinner can be played on all four sides and is a scoring domino. Any other double, if exposed sideways, counts as one spot (or zero points).
At the end of a round players compare the value of their remaining domino tiles. The player with the lowest total is declared the winner of that round. The winners then subtract the values of their opponent’s dominoes from their score and play another round until a player passes 101 points.
